Complete Brake Repair

IQ Autoworks | Campbell, CA

Brakes are the single most important safety system on your vehicle and you want them to be working properly! At IQ Auto Works our trained brake technicians have all the knowledge and tools required to make sure your vehicle's braking system is Tip Top.

Brake Time?
• Is your Brake Warning or ABS light on?
• Does your vehicle squeak or grind when you depress the brake pedal?
• Is your brake fluid dark colored in the reservoir?
• Does your vehicle pull to one side or shudder when coming to a stop?

If so, you probably need Brake system repairs. Here we have provided an in depth tutorial on how your brake systems work and why they ar
e so important to pay attention to.

Brake Systems
The typical brake system consists of disk brakes in front and either disk or Drum Brakes in the rear. These are connected by a system of tubes and hoses that link the brake at each wheel to the master cylinder. When you step on the brake pedal you are actually pushing against a plunger in the master cylinder, which forces hydraulic oil (brake fluid) through a series of tubes and hoses to the braking unit at each wheel. Since hydraulic fluid (or any fluid for that matter) cannot be compressed, pushing fluid through a pipe is just like pushing a steel bar through a pipe. Unlike a steel bar, however, fluid can be directed through many twists and turns on its way to its destination, arriving with the exact same motion and pressure that it started with. It is very important that the fluid is pure liquid and that there are no air bubbles in it. Air can compress, which causes a sponginess to the pedal and severely reduced braking efficiency. If air is suspected, then the system must be bled to remove the air. There are "bleeder screws" at each wheel cylinder and caliper for this purpose.

Disc Brake Systems
On a disk brake system the fluid from the master cylinder is forced into a caliper where it presses against a piston. The piston, in-turn, squeezes two brake pads against the disk rotor, which is attached to the wheel, forcing it to slow down or stop. This process is similar to a bicycle brake where two rubber pads press against the wheel rim and create friction.

Drum Brake Systems
With drum brakes, fluid is forced into the wheel cylinder, which pushes the brake shoes out so that the friction linings are pressed against the drum, which is attached to the wheel, causing the wheel to stop. In either case, the friction surfaces of the pads on a disk brake system or the shoes on a drum brake system convert the forward motion of the vehicle into heat. Heat is what causes the friction surfaces (linings) of the pads and shoes to eventually wear out and require replacement.

At IQ Auto Works we provide a multitude of brake repair services for your safety.

Timing Belt

IQ Autoworks | Campbell, CA

Driven by the crankshaft, the timing belt keeps internal engine components in sync by causing valves to open and close at the proper time. In order to maintain the mechanical integrity the engine components must be in precise synchronization. If the timing belt is loose or improperly adjusted, it may "jump time" (skipping a tooth or more, usually on the cam gear). This results in a loss of synchronization and engine performance.

Two Types of Engines

There are 2 types of engines you will hear about when discussing a broken timing belt, "Interference" and "Non-Interference". These terms refer to the relationship between the pistons and valves, when the camshaft and crankshaft are out of synchronization.

• Non-interference: When the timing belt breaks the valves and pistons will not come into contact with one another and you can merely replace the belt and all should be well.
• Interference engine: This is another matter. If the belt breaks, the pistons will hit the valves, bending them and causing major engine damage. At the very least the cylinder head will need to be removed and the valves replaced, in extreme cases the piston may be damaged and the engine may need replacement.

In addition, because the timing belt is made from rubber and reinforced with fiber cords, it naturally degrades over time. It should be replaced at scheduled intervals, which vary among car manufacturers, but are usually every 60,000 to 90,000 miles.
In some cases, when the timing belt fails, the engine will simply stop running; replacing the belt will fix the problem.

Engine Cooling System

IQ Autoworks | Campbell, CA

What is it?  The engine cooling system is designed to dissipate heat from the internal moving components away from the engine. The cooling system is comprised of many components that allow this heat transfer and keeps your engine at a safe operating temperature.

What Does It Do?

The key parts of the cooling system remove heat from the engine and automatic transmission and dissipate it to the air outside. The water pump circulates coolant through the engine. The coolant absorbs the heat and returns it to the radiator where the heat is dissipated. The thermostat regulates the coolant flow to keep it consistent for efficient engine operation.

Typical Wear and Tear Factors that affect the replacement of cooling system parts include:
• Driving habits
• Operating conditions
• Type of vehicle
• Type of coolant
• Frequency of regular maintenance such as coolant changes
• Requirements by your manufacturers specifications

• Overheating
• Sweet smell
• Leaks
• Repeatedly need to add fluid

All Vehicles require anti-freeze coolant to keep your engine at the correct operating temperature. This anti-freeze unfortunately has a predetermined life before it becomes more harmful to your cooling system in the form of corrosion and contaminants. At IQ Auto Works we use Anti Freeze flushing equipment to make sure that your system is flushed of all its debris and corrosion caused by the break down of coolant. We also have the equipment and knowledge to diagnose those unwanted coolant leaks and heater core problems.

Cooling components we replace or repair:

• Anti-freeze
• Coolant temp sensor
• Heater core

• Heater hoses
• Fan belts
• Radiator cap
• Radiator fan/fan clutch
• Radiator hoses
• Serpentine belt
• Thermostat
• Water pump

Air Conditioning & Heating

IQ Autoworks | Campbell, CA

What does it do?  Air conditioning & Heating use a three part process to work: the compressor, condenser, and evaporator. This 3 part process keeps the system running smoothly.
